SPEAKER PREPARATION ROOM

The Speaker Preparation Room (MEDIA CENTER) is located in Room Rio (Level 2):

All speakers are required to report to the Speaker Preparation Room (MEDIA CENTER) with their presentation material one day in advance (preferably) or at least 2 hours prior to starting time of the session in order to meet with the technical and coordination staff for any technical support required. Presentations taking place in the first morning sessions should be delivered to the Speaker Preparation Room during the previous day.

At the Speaker Preparation Room, it may be possible to do final technical verifications of the presentations and review the content. Each lecture hall/room is staffed by a professional technician who will take care of all technical aspects of the presentation. The organizers recommend using the laptops provided in the lecture halls/rooms in order to guarantee smooth operation of presentations. Therefore, use of personal laptops is generally not allowed, unless agreed and checked in advance with the technical staff both in the Speaker Preparation Room and the lecture hall/room.

EXHIBITION

WCS 2017 will feature a trade exhibition that includes organizations, companies and manufacturers related to clinical and experimental surgery. The exhibition will be held in hall 4.1. The exhibition hours will be:

As a security requirement, please remember to wear your name badge at all times within the congress premises to have access to the scientific sessions, exhibition and social functions. Additionally, an entry ticket is required for:

PHOTOGRAPHING AND RECORDING

Photographing, audio taping, video recording, digital taping or any other form of recording for commercial use is strictly prohibited in the session rooms and poster areas. The copyright of scientific contributions is to the International Society of Surgery (ISS/SIC) and the World Journal of Surgery (WJS).

SMOKING

Smoking is prohibited at the congress venue. Smoking is allowed only at designated areas outside the Congress Center Basel.

CANCELLATION TERMS

For cancellations received before 10 July 2017, Midnight CET: CHF 100.- per participant are deducted as a handling fee. For cancellations received after 10 July 2017: No payment will be refunded.

NAME CHANGES

Name changes can be made onsite at the Registration Desk. A handling fee of CHF 50 will be charged.

ONSITE REGISTRATION

When registering onsite, participants and exhibitors, as well as registered accompanying persons, receive a personal name badge, entry tickets and other congress material with their participant reference number.

EDUCATIONAL SESSION

Early morning Sessions/Workshops are held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

These sessions are organized by the indicated Society.

LECTURES

Distinguished lectures will be given by invited Lecturers. The lectures are organized by the indicated Societies.

MAIN SESSIONS AND VIDEO SESSIONS

Subjects dealt with in these sessions are at the responsibility of the indicated Societies. The subjects in Main Sessions address specific topics of the various specialties.

FREE PAPER AND POSTER SESSIONS

All fully accepted Abstracts can be found in the Abstract Volume of the Congress (online under www.wcs2017.com). These Abstracts are presented during the Free Paper (oral) and Poster Discussion Sessions according to the program schedule.

Posters will be displayed in the Poster Exhibition from Monday 12:00 noon until Wednesday 16:00 hrs.

POSTER EXHIBITION ONLY

Posters in the category Poster Exhibition only will be displayed in the Poster Exhibition from Monday noon until Wednesday 16:00 hrs. Presenting Authors of Poster Exhibition Only presentations are requested to be at their poster on Tuesday, 15 August 2017 (12:15–13:15), respectively on Monday, 14 August 2017 (14:45–15:30) for IAES posters, to discuss their presentation with interested delegates.

CURRENCY AND CREDIT CARDS

The franc is the currency and legal tender of Switzerland and Liechtenstein. One Swiss Franc is subdivided into 100 cents. Coins consist of 5 cents, 10 cents, 20 cents, 50 cents, 1 Swiss Franc, 2 Swiss Francs and 5 Swiss Francs. Note denominations are 10 Francs, 20 Francs, 50 Francs, 100 Francs, 200 Francs and 1’000 Francs.

Current (June 2017) exchange rate: 1 USD = 0.97 Swiss Francs, 1 Euro = 1.09 Swiss Francs.

Foreign bank notes and traveler’s checks can be converted into Swiss Francs at the hotel, foreign exchange banks and other authorized money exchange outlets. The exchange rate is subject to market fluctuations. Most major credit cards are accepted in hotels, shops and restaurants. VISA and MasterCard are accepted at the congress registration desk. Personal or company cheques are not accepted at the registration desk.

TIPPING

Restaurant prices usually include service charge but a reward for good services is always appreciated.

TIME

Switzerland is two hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT+2). Switzerland does observe daylight savings.

Clothing

The weather in Basel in August is generally nice and warm.
The summer of 2017 has brought a big heat wave over central Europe. Temperatures during the day can easily reach the 30°C (85°F)
The seasonal average, however, should be around the mid twenties (25°C / 75°F).
Evenings and nights can be chilly with temperatures falling below 20°C / 65°F).
Please be informed, that the hotter than average temperatures this year result in summer thunderstorms which are relatively unpredictable. Be prepared to take rain protection along.
