TRAVEL AWARDS WCS 2017

Several Travel Awards will be offered by various societies. Application requirements are as described below (scroll down for all information). Note: Travel Scholarship by only one Society may be accepted by each applicant. If you apply to more than one Society for Travel Scholarship you must inform all other Societies where your application is still in process as soon as your first Travel Scholarship has been granted.


ISS/SIC Foundation Travel Scholarship

The International Society of Surgery Foundation (ISS/SIC Foundation) will offer a number of travel grants to young surgeons from developing countries who have demonstrated interest in teaching and research. The award will permit the recipient access to the 47th World Congress of Surgery WCS 2017 of the ISS/SIC in Basel, Switzerland, August 13-17, 2017. Awardees will have their registration fee waived. The award is to be a contribution towards travel, hotel and living expenses. Please note that the award is usually about USD 3,000.00 and may not cover the total coverage of these costs, which must be met from your own resources.

Applicants must be documented graduates of Schools of Medicine and younger than age 40 years. Applicants whose careers are in the developing stage are deemed more suitable candidates than those in senior academic positions. 

Please include your date of birth in the application and a photograph preferably of passport size. Applications will be accepted only when the applicant is in surgical practice, teaching or research in a field of or related to surgery for a minimum of one year following completion of all formal training.

Individuals who are already economically funded by any third party may not apply for an ISS-Foundation Travel Grant. If any support is obtained while the ISS-Foundation Application is in process or already awarded, the ISS-Foundation office must be immediately informed.

Application Requirements:

  • Applicants must have demonstrated a commitment to teaching and/or clinical or basic research in accordance with the standards of the applicant’s country of origin.

  • Applicants should provide separate lists of all published scientific journal articles, book chapters and abstracts (avoid articles in press).

  • Applicants must provide a short statement of personal goals and career objectives in the discipline of surgery.

  • Applicants should have a working knowledge of English (proceedings of the ISS/SIC Congress are in English only).

  • Applicants must submit a letter of recommendation from not more than three of their colleagues, one of whom must be the chairman of the department of surgery in which they hold their appointment. The chairman’s letter must include a specific statement detailing the nature and extent of the teaching and other academic involvement of the applicant.

  • Travel scholars are required to submit a report of the experience provided through their scholarship to the Foundation office at the completion of the meeting.


Further information and travel award applications for the 2017 Basel Congress can be obtained from the Foundation office or the ISS/SIC website (www.iss-sic.com). Applications must be submitted electronically on or before February 15, 2017. Successful applicants will be notified by March 31, 2017. The award must be used for the Basel meeting. It cannot be postponed.

IAES Travel Awards

Presenting Authors of free papers who are residents in training, fellows, or students will be eligible for one of the 10 travel scholarships offered by the International Association of Endocrine Surgeons IAES (USD 1’000.00 each) based on the rank of their submitted IAES abstract. These eligible Presenting Authors will be notified ahead of time of the acceptance of their paper for presentation. If interested in the Travel Award, they will need to submit via e-mail:

  1. A cover letter listing the title and number of the accepted abstract, as well as the importance of the award to the applicant.

  2. Curriculum vitae that includes listing of the applicant’s years of surgical training and prior publications.

  3. A letter of reference from a mentor in surgery, explaining the importance of this award to the applicant.

Travel awards will be presented via wire transfer following the conclusion of the Basel meeting.

Submission: All applications must be complete in the IAES Secretary's office (IAES_JP@icloud.com) by April 15, 2017. All received emails will be confirmed by return message. Applicants will be notified of the awards by April 28, 2017.

BSI Travel Scholar 2017

BSI will be offering eight travel scholarships for young surgeons from low and middle income countries (http://data.worldbank.org/income-level/low-and-middle-income). The criteria for the award is that the candidate has to be aged 40 years and below on 13 August 2017. The candidate has to have an abstract submitted either as an oral or poster presentation at the World Congress of Surgery WCS 2017. Successful candidates are encouraged to submit a full paper on their abstract to World Journal of Surgery. Members of BSI will be given priority, although membership is not a requirement. The successful candidate will be given Euro 1'000.00, and free entry to one of the preconference workshops on 13 August 2017, as well as the BSI dinner on 15 August 2017. The registration fee is not included in the award.

Notification of the award to the applicant will be given by March 31, 2017.


Yokohama Award of Japan Chapter ISS/SIC

-WCS Travel Grant offered by Japan Chapter
to Japanese young surgeons -

In order to encourage Japanese young surgeons’ active participation in the WCS, Japan Chapter of ISS/SIC has set up a travel grant program that provides partial financial support for them to participate in the WCS.
This grant is funded by contribution by LOC ISW2011 Yokohama, which was sourced from its residual profit. For this background and in commemoration of the success of ISW2011 Yokohama, the grant was named “Yokohama Award.”

The outline of the Yokohama Award program for WCS Basel is as follows.

1. Eligibility: Japanese surgeons aged 40 or younger at the time of application and satisfy the following requirements.
     (1)  Has submitted abstracts to the WCS 2017 Congress as oral presenter
     (Submitted abstracts choosing the category of “Oral Only” or “Oral or Poster”)
     (2) Has reference from a member of Japan Chapter ISS/SIC

2. Number of awards:  5

3. Amount of award: 100,000 yen each (= Approximately 818 Euro), 500,000 yen in total

4. Period of application acceptance:  By Friday, January 28, 2017
     (10 days after the deadline of the WCS 2017 abstract submission)

5. Procedures for application:

Lloyd M. Nyhus Traveling Fellowship Application

SPONSORED BY THE US CHAPTER of the INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY OF SURGERY

The US Chapter sponsors The Nyhus Traveling Fellowship, which allows a young US surgeon to attend the World Congress of Surgery, the biennial meeting of the International Society of Surgery. The applicant must be a U.S. citizen, in training or within their first 5 years of practice and practicing in the U.S. The award will provide up to $2500 towards the young surgeon’s travel and accommodation expenses (registration fees will be waived for the scholar) to attend the World Congress of Surgery in Basel, Switzerland August 13 –17 2017.

Application requirements:

  • Current curriculum vitae or resume including full name, address, e-mail address and details of academic and/or professional achievements
  • A completed application form
  • Up to a 250-word statement describing your reasons for applying for the traveling scholarship and your interest in attending the World Congress of Surgery
  • A letter of support from a current US Chapter member
  • A copy of an appropriately prepared abstract that has been submitted for the 2017 World Congress of Surgery

Award Application deadline: February 3, 2017.

Award selection criteria include:

  • Successful submission of abstract to the Basel, Switzerland meeting
  • Abstracts must be submitted by 1/18/17
  • Notification of accepted abstracts will be on or around 3/31/2017
  • Accomplishments and career goals
  • Strength of support from US Chapter Member
  • Financial need
